The bill, which earmarks US$47.32 billion in discretionary funding, represents a scaled-back budget compared to the current fiscal year, aligning with the administration’s revised spending priorities. Despite these overall reductions, the legislation ensures continued support for crucial U.S. allies such as Taiwan, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. It reflects a broader strategy to address the challenges posed by countries like China and Iran, as well as other potential adversaries.
Significantly, the bill tasks the U.S. Secretary of State, in collaboration with the Defense Secretary, with prioritizing the delivery of defense equipment and services to Taiwan. This underscores the United States’ commitment to bolstering Taiwan’s defense capabilities amid growing regional tensions. Additionally, the legislation dedicates a minimum of US$4 million to the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, which is administered through the American Institute in Taiwan, further strengthening bilateral ties.
The bill also includes a stipulation that prevents the allocation of funds for the production or display of maps that inaccurately represent Taiwan’s territorial boundaries or governance system, thereby affirming the United States’ stance on Taiwan’s geopolitical status. Before becoming law, the legislation must still receive approval from the U.S. Senate and subsequently be signed by the president.
