In a move aimed at easing trade tensions, China and the United States have agreed to reduce tariffs on $60 billion worth of goods exchanged between the two nations. The agreement specifies that each country will lower tariffs on approximately $30 billion in non-sensitive goods, potentially boosting market access for American exports to China.
Under this arrangement, China will decrease tariffs on a range of U.S. agricultural products, including corn, wheat, sorghum, meat, dairy products, vegetable oils, and seafood. Additionally, wood products, cosmetics, and medical devices are among the items expected to benefit from reduced duties. Meanwhile, the United States will lower tariffs on selected Chinese goods such as small household appliances, tableware, blankets, toys, children’s car seats, and holiday decorations.
As part of the negotiation process, both countries have agreed to extend their existing trade truce by two months, now set to expire on January 10. This extension is intended to facilitate further discussions on trade and economic issues, fostering a more stable environment for businesses operating between the two economies.
Continued talks are anticipated to address investment opportunities, trade barriers, and other concerns highlighted by companies from both nations. This development marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to mend trade relations and create more favorable conditions for international commerce.
