US Uses Tech to Label Brazil’s PCC, Red Command as Terrorists

The U.S. government has classified Brazil’s two most prominent criminal factions, the First Capital Command (PCC) and the Red Command, as foreign terrorist organizations. This move comes in response to their extensive involvement in drug trafficking, organized crime, and the broader threat they pose to regional security.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that these groups are among the most dangerous in Brazil and have been expanding their influence throughout Latin America and into the United States. This new designation aligns them with other criminal entities in the region that have faced similar classifications in the past.

Both the PCC and the Red Command began within the confines of Brazil’s prison system but have since morphed into formidable transnational crime networks. They play a significant role in channeling cocaine from neighboring countries to markets in North America and Europe.

Despite resistance from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who argued that Brazil has sufficient mechanisms to tackle organized crime and expressed concerns over national sovereignty, Brazilian authorities have not been idle. Recent operations have targeted the PCC, including efforts to dismantle their alleged infiltration into the financial sector.

The U.S. decision is poised to influence Brazil’s political landscape, especially with the presidential election on the horizon. While opposition leaders have praised the move as a decisive international stance against organized crime, analysts are still evaluating the designation’s practical implications, particularly regarding its effects on financial transactions and regional security collaboration.
