This impressive debut outshines the launch of Nolan’s previous 2023 hit, Oppenheimer. The film, which brings Homer’s legendary Greek poem to life, stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, and chronicles the perilous 10-year journey of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he returns home following the Trojan War.
With a substantial production budget of $250 million, The Odyssey stands as Nolan’s most successful opening outside of his acclaimed Batman series, marking his best box-office performance since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. In North America alone, the film grossed $124.5 million, securing its position as the third-largest opening of the year, just after Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Despite bearing an R rating, the film attracted a considerable audience, especially among viewers aged 18 to 34.
Internationally, the United Kingdom and Ireland proved to be key markets, contributing £12.9 million within the film’s first three days. Notably, The Odyssey is the first feature film to be entirely shot with IMAX cameras, offering audiences enhanced visual clarity and resolution. The movie premiered in more than 12,800 venues and was shown on 26,000 screens globally, including 440 IMAX theaters.
